New Study Shows Link Between Facebook and Eating Disorders among Teens

Teenage girls who spend more time in front of Facebook tend to develop a more negative self-image; leads to more cases of bulimia, anorexia and binge eating among America’s youth

A latest study from the University of Haifa shows that a teenage girl who logs in more time in the popular social networking site Facebook has an increased chance of developing an unhealthy body and self image which may lead to an eating disorder. These most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia or binge eating. Facebook is a site where you can share your lives with others through virtual connections.

A control group made up 248 girls between the ages of 12 – 19 was asked to participate in the study conducted by Prof. Yael Latzer, Prof. Ruth Katz and Zohar Spivak of the University of Haifa, Social Welfare and Health Sciences Department. It was found that there was a direct link between low self-empowerment and the amount of time spent surfing on Facebook. The effects of those who spent more time on Facebook were increased bouts of depression stemming from a negative self-image and physical dissatisfaction which led to extreme weight-loss diet fads and disorders.
